Look What You Made Me Write

We have very few rules here at Soft Core Sophistry, but one of them is that when Taylor Swift drops a new single after a long hiatus, our hiatus must also end.

Her new single “Look What You Made Me Do” is out, and with the release of her new music video on Sunday, it’s time to give it a full accounting.

Let’s delve deep into what some unnamed someone made Swift do.

Needing Taylor Swift, now more than ever

I might have been a bit premature a couple of weeks ago when I said with the election over, the anger permeating our country would dissipate. Whoops!

Instead, we have descended into a bitter division. We have protests against the president elect before he’s even taken office. We have the same president elect crying that the theater should be a safe space for his vice president elect.

In less than 5 years, Taylor Swift will be running this country

I know imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. And it’s a real ego boost that my little blog has reached some of the highest levels of power.

It’s still an improvement on the level of political discourse in this country though.

Taylor Swift has a new song out, so it’s time to revisit the delightful madness she exhibits.

Last time, we reviewed “Shake It Off” which we determined was a monstrosity of a song that transcended time and space to be the inspiration for every terrible song that came before it.

This time we look at “Blank Space” though I can’t give you another 1,500 words on it. It still bears investigation.

And animated gifs. We’ll intersperse them throughout the post. Continue reading

Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off”: The Platonic Ideal of a Terrible Pop Song?

A few weeks ago, a song came on the radio I hadn’t heard. It was terrible, but really catchy.

I found out later that it was, as you may have guessed based on the title of this article, Taylor Swift’s new opus, “Shake It Off”.

I have heard it many more times since then, and it has wormed its way deep into my brain. So let’s take a deep look at it, and possibly exorcise it from me in the process. Continue reading
